Overview:

MICU Night Medical Intensivivist- Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, CT

Primary function of this night-time intensivist position working for the Hospitalist Service is to provide comprehensive care to Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) patients in collaboration with the internal medicine house staff, ICU based hospitalists, and the director and operations manager of the Hospitalist Service and the director of the MICU. Due to the size and complexity of the MICU there is a need for supervision of the house staff, hospitalists as well as direct patient care .

Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Practice

1.1 Supervises internal medicine and emergency medicine house staff as well as critical care fellows and ICU based hospitalists and APPs who work overnight in the MICU .
1.2 Assists in the care of patients as necessary.

1.3 Is available to all nighttime providers for assistance in assessing patients, developing plans of care , and the performance of invasive procedures .

1.4 The night-time intensivist is also available to evaluate and treat new admissions, perform triage and manage incoming and outgoing MICU flow and will assist with 'cross coverage? of patients.
1.5 MICU lead intensivist will also assist with cardiac arrests (as part of a team) within and outside of the MICU and assists the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) .

1.6 Involvement and provision of patient care via Tele-ICU as part of core role may be requested after onboarding to MICU operations is complete.
1.7 The intensivist should be familiar with current best practices in medical critical care and maintain professionalism and high ethical standards at all times .

2. Education

2.1 Teaches and supervises trainees overnight over the course of patient care

2.2 Participates in continuing medical education (CME) activity annually that meets all medical staff reappointment criteria and improves quality of care provided by the service

3. Patient Safety

3.1 Immediately reports any concerns about safety to the operations manager, director, or medical director of the intensive care unit
3.2 Follows all Yale-New Haven Hospital patient safety policies and procedures for healthcare providers

3.3 As a healthcare provider, is responsible for reporting adverse or potential adverse events related to patient care

3.4 Washes hands before and after every patient contact and follows all infection control guidelines

3.5 Uses universal precautions as appropriate and uses time outs and checklists that are part of procedures and standard hospital operations

4. Operations

4.1 Follows all NEMG and YNHH policies and procedures

4.2 Responds to pages in a timely manner

4.3 Notifies Operations Manager if pager or cell-phone communication device is lost, stolen or malfunctioning

4.4 Completes all mandatory training related to HIPPA, Emergency Management, Patient Safety

4.5 Ensures required licensure and certificates are kept up to date and that NEMG always has a copy of current license and certificates

4.6 Attends all team meetings as required

4.7 Bills for inpatient services at time of service as appropriate

Qualifications:

EDUCATION (number of years and type required to perform the position duties):

Teaches and supervises trainees overnight over the course of patient care

Participates in continuing medical education (CME) activity annually that meets all medical staff reappointment criteria and improves quality of care provided by the service .

EXPERIENCE (number of years and type required to meet an acceptable level of performance): Board certification or board eligible.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

Excellent clinical, interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently, as well as with others . Invasive procedures such as central venous access placement, thoracentesis, paracentesis, arterial line placement, intubation of airway (placement of endotracheal tube) lumbar puncture, and pulmonary artery catheter placement preferred .

Accountable to conduct accurate and appropriate evaluation, care, and coordination of care of medically critically ill inpatients .

Evaluates, manages, and coordinates care of medically critically ill inpatients, including interactions with other services involved in the care, and possibly in the ED . Works with Director and/or Operations Manager on special projects as assigned.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

MD Degree, full IM residency training and board certification in Internal Medicine is mandatory . The candidate must have completed (or expected to complete) a Critical Care Medicine or Pulmonary Critical Care fellowship program , and be Critical Care board eligible at the time of hire . Must have attending medical staff privileges while at Yale -New Haven Hospital, hold a valid Connecticut medical license, CT Controlled Substance Registration and Federal DEA Certificate . Must be BLS/ACLS certified.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND:

Fourteen, twelve hour shifts per month. Reports at 7PM and works until 7AM the next day .
