DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW Risk and Safety Services is comprised of five departments and each of these units is dedicated to maintaining and promoting an aspect of the health and safety of all members of the campus community. The UCSC Office of Risk Services is a department within Risk and Safety Services in the Division of Finance, Operations and Administration (FOA). Risk Services supports the campus by helping departments identify their risk exposures, recommending strategies to reduce or eliminate identified risks, and administering the campus insurance programs to facilitate maximum recovery from accidental losses. JOB SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Campus Wellness Program Manager in the Office of Risk Services, the Health Educator is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs and workshops for the campus which are directed toward improving the health and well-being of faculty, staff, and student employees by addressing health risks and to promote a healthy workplace environment that supports healthy lifestyles, risk reduction, and illness prevention.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $80,300/annually
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES 60% - Program Development - Collaborates with the Campus Wellness Program Manager to research, design, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive worksite wellness program for all staff and faculty to promote health and reduce risk.
- Schedules and implements health risk assessments, screenings, and awareness campaigns.
- Coordinates with departments/units to provide wellness programming and workshops, resources, and recommendations tailored to the needs of diverse campus populations.
- Organizes special events and incentives promoting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle (e.g.:walking programs, etc.) to mitigate health risks.
- Develops and presents group wellness education workshops(e.g.: emotional, spiritual, intellectual, occupational, financial, nutritional, etc.) and classes for faculty and staff.
- Coordinates the Wellness Ambassador Program to create a culture of health and employee engagement. Recruits additional Wellness Ambassadors and create programming and training to increase engagement.
25% - Program Engagement - Assist with maintaining a dynamic and informative faculty and staff wellness program website.
- Develop and implement marketing strategies, including social media, to promote programs and increase employee engagement.
- Create health and wellness-related communications such as health education materials, newsletters, and resources.
15% - Program Evaluation - Evaluate the effectiveness of the health improvement/wellness program for risk reduction.
- Assesses the effectiveness of course content and training techniques for individual programs.
- Develops, secures, and maintains any equipment or instructional materials needed to conduct classes.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Experience in worksite wellness, health promotion, wellness program management or health education.
- Thorough knowledge of the health promotion and education field.
- Knowledge of principles, theories and best practices of worksite health promotion programs, risk reduction and health promotion/behavior change.
- Knowledge and skills associated with both the development and delivery of health education programs and services.
- Demonstrated analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations. Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
- Excellent writing skills in order to present information in a clear and concise manner to multiple levels in the organization.
- Excellent speaking, and group presentation skills in order to present information in a clear and concise manner to multiple levels in the organization.
- Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, self-directed/motivated professional with the ability to multi-task with efficiency and timeliness.
- Excellent judgment and decision-making skills within a complex organizational setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in teams and with a diverse population of faculty, staff, community partners and vendors.
- Demonstrated ability to deal with confidential information in a discreet and professional manner, knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements for worksite health promotion.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Experience in public sector, healthcare setting or higher education.
- Health promotion/education certification such as CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) or RD
- Demonstrated skills and proficiency in assessing employee health risks and providing educational guidance on health and wellness related topics (e.g.: nutrition, weight management, stress management, tobacco cessation, etc.).
- Ability to read, write and speak Spanish.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
