Department Summary We study space, time, energy, and matter at all scales ranging from those describing subatomic particles to the evolution and structure of the universe as a whole. Physics students have the opportunity to train with state-of-the-art equipment in modern laboratories. More than 60 full-time physics graduate students conduct research under the supervision of about 20 faculty members, making our Graduate Programs one of the largest in the state.
Position Overview This position provides administrative support for every aspect of the graduate student experience from recruitment to admission to retention, including but not limited to maintaining student alumni records, assisting student registration, and working with the Graduate Committee.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree and one year of experience in recruiting, academic advising, counseling, student services, customer service or related experience or can substitute education for experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Strong presentation skills and problem-solving skills.
- Developed interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Products.
- Ability to obtain credit card for travel.
- Good driving record and access to a vehicle.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Professional in appearance, motivated, self-directed and have the ability and willingness to communicate enthusiastically with diverse populations in a positive, courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends for occasional events.
- Willingness to travel extensively.
Preferred Qualifications The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: Three years of higher education academic experience. Strong organizational skills are highly desirable due to the complex coordination efforts required for this position.
Required License/Registration/Certifications Job Duties: - Attends Graduate Committee meetings and communicates on behalf of the Graduate Committee Chair in their absence.
- Coordinates updates to the graduate student handbook.
- Regularly assists students in securing advising with the Graduate Advisor, advises students generally, and assists graduate student registration.
- Submits Qualifying Examination Results (QER) to the Toulouse Graduate School once Ph.D. students pass their dissertation proposal.
- Prepares degree plans for graduate students and monitors student progress according to department and graduate school requirements. Informs students and faculty of important program deadlines and requirements.
- Interacts with prospective students via email, over the phone, and in person that are interested in UNT and the Physics Departments graduate programs.
- Represents the department at local and national recruiting events in order to promote UNT Physics and recruit graduate students.
- Represents the Department at the Council of Advisors Meetings in the absence of or at the request of the Graduate Advisor and attends Graduate Advisor Meetings held by the Toulouse Graduate School.
- Maintains all graduate student records, updates active grad student email list for the department, and aids in gathering and compiling alumni data.
- Shared reception duties for the main office, including but not limited to answering the phone, greeting and assisting walk-in visitors, receiving and distributing mail, checking out calculators to students and checking them back in, etc.
- Assists the faculty coordinator with Colloquium speakers, including but not limited to circulation of colloquia information to the department, preparation of the lecture hall for the speaker, etc.
