The primary purpose of this position is to support the underwriting function through customer service and rating and processing of underwriting files. Operate within assigned level of authority. May participate in structured underwriting training events and programs to increase skill set.

What you'll be doing:
  • Ensure underwriting files are in order, complete with submission information and rating methodology, according to Fine Art team requirements.
  • Assist in handling renewals, mid-term endorsement requests, and new busness in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines.
  • Work closely with CAT risk management team to complete pre-bind aggregation clearances and natural catastrophe modeling requests
  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
  • Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state.
  • Develop knowledge of coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions.
  • Liaise on behalf of underwriting team with operations team.
  • Assist with resolving billing issues, BOR requests, and premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers.
What we're looking for:

The successful candidate will have:
  • Minimum of 1 year underwriting experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Desire and ability to improve Markel's position in the domestic marketplace
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills
  • Must be a collaborative, team player that can provide creative solutions to problems and enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment
  • High energy self-starter, good decision maker with entrepreneurial spirit
  • Travel as required when appropriate

Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Associate Underwriter position is $28/hour - $38/hour (estimated $55k - $75k/year) with a 15% bonus potential.
